Art-lovers know that our universities offer some of the most innovative exhibitions of fine art to be seen. Moore College of Art and Design is no exception. The only visual arts college for women in the United States and one of only two in the world, Moore College plays a vital role in enriching all our lives.

The College features two outstanding galleries. Though each has its special purpose, they work in unison to provide " . . . an original combination of exhibitions and educational programs featuring art from within the city and around the world that otherwise might not be presented to the Philadelphia community." Both galleries actively seek to present significant work by female artists and designers.

The Goldie Paley Gallery shows work by national and international artists. The Levy Gallery exhibits the work of Philadelphia artists exclusively, providing an opportunity for both established and emerging artists, as well as for the public, to explore new fields.

Both galleries present many changing exhibits throughout the year. As an example, a unique exhibition entitled "Doing Time" was shown recently in the Levy Gallery. This eye-opening collection featured creative responses to incarceration, with works done by Philadelphia-Area Inmates. The Goldie Paley Gallery hosted "Luc Tuymans: Paintings, 1978-1993." Here this critically acclaimed artist presented uneasily composed portraits, fleeting landscapes, mysterious corners of rooms and gardens, and fragmented human forms, all in his provocative style. Though these exhibitions have gone, they are representative of the unique talent to be found in these galleries.

Exhibitions often include a chance to meet the artist, with lectures, book signings and open forums on a wide variety of topics. Throughout the year families can attend special events and symposia, workshops and performances. Call for a calendar.
