One of the foremost Latin American cultural institutions in the U.S., El Museo specializes in the arts and culture of Puerto Rico. El Museo presents art exhibitions of contemporary and historical scope, and special events such as film festivals, lectures, symposia, performances, concerts, and festivals.
A permanent collection of 8,000 objects features paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs by outstanding Puerto Rican and other Latin American artists, spanning nearly 800 years of history. The core of the pre-Columbian collection consists of rare artifacts created by the Arawak Tainos, the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean basin at the time of Columbus' voyage to the Americas.
With recently expanded galleries, El Museo is able to present larger portions of its collection to the public, with stunning thematic exhibitions such as the recent Reaffirming Spirituality, the last of a three-part celebration of the Museum's 25th Anniversary.
Family programs are often available on weekends, including tours, performing arts, and workshops. Adult Groups are also welcome (maximum of 25) for tours.
Programs and Workshops for School children range from interesting gallery tours (up to 30 students) to hands-on workshops where students express their visual experience through the manipulation of art materials.
This museum presents a fine opportunity for a glimpse into old and important cultures whose influence have carried over strongly into present time.
