Built by George Read II, this outstanding 1801 mansion on the Delaware features 22 rooms of Federal grandeur, including elaborately carved woodwork, relief plasterwork, gilded fanlights, and other luxuries of the day. A 2½-acre formal garden is the oldest in the region.

Guided Tours reveal the daily lives of the Read family and their servants. Tours reflect the changing seasons, and a variety of special events throughout the year provide culture and entertainment for the family.

Individuals and Groups can enjoy a tour, and School Groups can participate in a number of programs, all of which feature hands-on activities and crafts. Discover the Read House (grades 3 - 12) includes a tour plus a 19th century project. Colonial New Castle Walking Tour (3 - 12) is a tour of the beautiful town. Childhood in New Castle (K - 12) explores the lives of Colonial children. Many others available, call.
