Tucked away behind Henry Hudson Parkway in Riverdale, nestled beside the Hudson River, is Wave Hill, one of New York City's finer cultural institutions. With twenty-eight acres of beautiful property and four greenhouses overlooking the Hudson, Wave Hill serves as a laboratory for discovery of humanity's relation to the environment.

Wave Hill offers a year-round schedule of events, visual and performing arts, and programs for individuals and families in the fields of horticulture, forest management, and landscape history and design. There is almost always something going on that people will find interesting and educational. Call for a calendar.

School Programs for grades K through 12 include, among others, Love of Leaf (grades K - 3): Match-Making with Shapes and Patterns, delivered during autumn, children collect leaves, identify them, and match the leaves with the trees that dropped them; Power of Seeds: Roots and Shoots ( 4 - 8): a Multi-Session Program where (at school) students dissect and analyze the anatomy of seeds, plant them, and record germination. At Wave Hill they learn of the many uses of seeds through a variety of hands-on activities; Hudson River Estuary: Geography, Geology & Marine Life Galore! (grades 4 - 8): students observe geologic formations showing how the river has carved its way through ancient rock. A week later, on the other side of the Bronx Peninsula, students go fishing with buckets and seine nets at Orchard Beach to examine the habitats of an estuarine environment.

Most programs are available in either single session or multi-session (three) format (multi for Bronx and Manhattan schools only), with the multi-format including a 90 minute presentation in the classroom to introduce the program, workbooks for each student, and a teacher's manual. Maximum class size is 32, with 1 supervisor per 11 students. Program offerings may change with the seasons.

Teacher Workshops utilize Wave Hill's unique resources to upgrade teachers' knowledge and experience in environmental science.
