| Located in one of nature's most pristine wildlife areas,
the Hempstead Estuary, the Marine Nature Study Area contains 52 acres of
saltmarsh, tidal creeks and uplands that are home to a rich variety of
wildlife. It is a waterfowl migration and wintering area for many species
of bird, with over 200 being sighted, including 25 nesting species.
Many types of small mammals and reptiles make their home
here, as well.
An Interpretive Center includes marine life displays and
salt water aquaria featuring local species. One mile of trails and boardwalks
lead visitors through this beautiful place by the sea, making it an ideal
spot for a family outing, photography, and nature study.
A variety of Educational Programs includes guided
field trips for school and youth groups, college level ecology programs,
and seining and sampling activities. Programs are adaptable for a wide
range of grade levels and are conducted by professionals in their fields.
Teachers should call to discuss the nature of the program they need. |
