The Jersey Central Power & Light Company offers a great opportunity for both family members and groups to learn more about the sources of the energy that powers all those appliances we so often take for granted.

There are two major segments to the tour, either of which can be taken separately if time is short. First is the Energy Spectrum, dedicated to demonstrating an improved standard of living that can be achieved through the wise use of energy sources compatible with the environment.

The Self-Guided tour, called The World of Energy, includes a myriad of hands-on exhibits, informative displays, and computer games that challenge visitors' energy IQ.

Ride the Energy Bicycle to generate your own electricity, test your smarts at Light Bulb Quest, compete with others in Race To the Future, and much more. It's high-tech fun and education.

Visitors can also choose from a number of informative video presentations that cover topics for all ages and levels of interest. Learn about electricity basics, the atom, energy production and wildlife, nuclear waste management, how to save on electric bills, radiation, geothermal energy production, and much more. Most videos are less than 30 minutes, with some as short as 10.

The second main feature is a 3-hour tour of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, adjacent to the Energy Spectrum. This is a comprehensive, mile-long walking tour of the actual plant Needless to say, it is fascinating. Note that Oyster Creek is required to enforce stringent security measures and safety requirements. No cameras are allowed.

Oyster Creek can accommodate groups of five at a time, and all power plant tours are by reservation only. All participants must be at least 18 years old.

School Groups have an amazing resource at JCP&L. It begins with a live presentation: Energy with Magic or You're Radioactive for grades 4 - 6, or A Users Guide to Planet Earth for grades 7 and 8. From there the tour is self-guided, using literature provided by JCP&L. A program and tour takes 2 hours.

Students of any age can benefit from this hands-on tour. Several of the videos mentioned above are suitable for grades Pre-K, and all will marvel at the great games and displays. School Groups should have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 60 students.

Scout Groups can enjoy several programs that may count toward merit badge attainment.

Just one of the great features of all of the above programs is that they are FREE for all.
