The striking galleries of this museum feature clean, bright spaces that are perfect for showcasing a distinguished collection of American painting, illustration, and English Pre-Raphaelite art. And the collections are indeed fabulous.

The Illustration collection includes many works from Howard Pyle, one of America's most beloved illustrators. In fact, the desire to keep 48 treasured Pyle works in Wilmington resulted in the founding of the organization that would evolve to become the Delaware Art Museum.

Among the paintings of Howard Pyle, visitors to the museum may enjoy The Mermaid, Marooned, An Attack on a Galleon, and many others. The works of some of Pyle's students can also be seen, each of the artists accomplished and very well known. N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Stanley Arthurs, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Maxfield Parrish are represented.

The American Art collections survey the period from 1840 to the present, providing visitors with an overview of American art development, from Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins to John Sloan and Andrew Wyeth. The works of West, Church, Inness, Glackens, Hopper, and other greats are highlighted here as well.

A dramatic Victorian setting showcases the English Pre-Raphaelite Collection featuring works of artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and others.

The Children's Gallery is an area for creative play, experimentation and discovery. The freedom to use a variety of art elements to create their own masterpieces inspires children to participate in the world of art.

Throughout the year the Museum presents a variety of wonderful changing exhibitions that offer exposure to a variety of historical movements, media and artists. Some exhibitions represent the holdings of other fine museums while others are drawn from the Delaware Art Museum's collections. The Museum also presents an exciting calendar of events as well as a comprehensive schedule of art classes and family programs. Something is happening here virtually every day of the year.
